Rules...Torture or Discipline?

Has it happened to you or is it just me? We humans makes rules to bring discipline in our systems and to get things done smoothly. Indians specially have specialization in making rules. Since the day we are born we keep hearing rules to follow everywhere. We have rules in our house if you want to live here, you will have to follow the rules. Did they bother to ask for my consent regarding it? Hell, no. Schools, junior college, my degree college and even my hostel had the list of rules that were basically forced on us. They followed them blindly as a rulebook since ages. We were asked to do the same again. World change drastically since early 90s to now. We went through a full cycle of revolution in last 100 years or so but still there’s only one thing that remained same though, rules. Yes, rules never change for anyone or anything. I thought when I will be an independent adult things will be different. But I was so innocent to think like that. I still get a list of rules from my office to shut my mouth that makes no sense, no logic, no fairness or transparency whatsoever. When you keep your side of promise, they should keep their side of promise, right? That’s how contracts are supposed to work but no, that’s not how they work here. Whenever you try to raise a genuine issue, they will find old rule in their rulebook and slam it on your face saying that’s our company policy. If that’s the case you should have explained in detail at the time of joining all your baseless rules and company policies instead of just writing company reserves all the rights and it will binding to all. We were foolish to believe that you and your company will be fair and transparent. I know I am not alone in this. You all have gone through all this at least one once in your life, right? When we ask why can’t I have promotion, salary raise or any issue that’s genuine and we know we deserve it by all means, but they will still find a rule to control the situation. How higher authorities twist rules and use them to represent their authority and power is commendable. I must say it’s a perfectly crafted skill. How people manipulate rules for their own gain and wish fulfillment or sometimes just to avoid their responsibility is insane. You will have to report at this time, you will have to make hundred excel sheets even if it isn’t serving any purpose. It is just mundane procedure to exhaust the individuals with no significant outcome of it. People should be given enough freedom to their work as they find convenient to do so. Yes I agree you need to get work done in stipulated time and so you give deadlines, that’s perfectly fine. But how and when they choose to do the work should be their choice. We all are unique and so our brains. Our brains operate differently at different times. Some people are more productive at daytime while some are more at night and that’s just one case I am mentioning how we are different from each other. There are thousands of different brain patterns we all have and when we work as per what works for us, we become ten times more productive and creative than we usually are. But even in 2022 people are still insists on making us all sheep that follows the crowd blindly. We are not sheep and we do have brains. We should be allowed to use that instead of asking us to follow the illogical rules.

Rules were made to bring harmony and balance in our systems and lives. But they are serving to torture us on daily basis now and this needs to stop somewhere. I am not saying rules are a bad thing but they should be logical and efficient. Most importantly they should be upgraded according to the changing times and lifestyles. They should be flexible for certain individuals in times of crisis. They should actually bring harmony between employee and employer instead of torture. This applies to families, schools, colleges and hostels as well. Let’s make world better place to live for all of us. If you are facing the same issues and I know that you all are, it’s high time we should raise a voice against it to bring the desired change. My one article isn’t going to change anything. But even if few people get aware and inspired by it and take a stand firmly for themselves. It has the ability to change some systems at least. This new change will prosper in future for sure.
